Designing visual intelligence for inspection workflows

How to turn inspection photos and notes into reviewable records, with source evidence, structured findings, semantic search and human approval.

An inspection photograph is evidence, but it is rarely a complete record. The asset, location, date, observer's intent and follow-up action may be spread across several tools. Visual intelligence is useful when it helps connect that context without turning a model's guess into an accepted finding.

Capture context alongside the image

Start with the information the inspector already knows. Let them select the asset, add a spoken or typed note and confirm the location. Keep the original image. For augmented photographs, preserve which elements came from the camera and which were drawn by the application. A rendered annotation is not necessarily evidence of a physical condition.

Ask for bounded observations

Use a defined output structure for observable details, questions and missing information. Distinguish an observation such as a visible mark from an inferred explanation of its cause. Allow the system to abstain. Do not treat a model's self-reported confidence as a calibrated probability without an evaluation that supports that interpretation.

Retrieve the right history

Semantic search can help find previous observations expressed in different words. Combine it with exact filters for asset identifiers, dates and access permissions. A similar-looking record from another site can be misleading. Show the source records with the answer so the reviewer can inspect why they were returned.

Keep approval visible

Make draft findings editable and distinguish them from approved records. Store the source evidence and the correction history needed by the workflow. In my Vinekeep work, structured findings, retrieval and a human approval step are central to turning AI output into usable decision support.

Evaluate in the field

Test glare, occlusion, poor connectivity, missing labels and repeated observations of the same object. Measure whether the workflow reduces reporting and retrieval effort without increasing missed issues or correction time. Include cases where a photo cannot establish the answer and an expert must inspect further.

An initial pilot can use an existing phone or tablet capture workflow. A wearable connection is a separate decision: it should improve the task enough to justify the additional capture, consent, device management and interaction requirements.
